Memorial plaques for women killed in the period 2000–2021, and local cooperation on violence prevention supported by Oak Foundation Denmark.

With funding from the Oak Foundation Denmark, we are installing memorial plaques across Denmark in honor of the women who have been victims of femicides. The plaques aim both to raise awareness about the killings of women in Denmark and to help prevent further violence. We know that making violence and the killing of women visible can help prevent such violence and killings (UN Women 2022). Violence against women and femicide are nationwide problems and therefore require structural prevention. Municipalities play a crucial role in preventing intimate partner violence and intimate partner killings. Their involvement in installing the memorial plaques opens up dialogue about these issues and represents an important acknowledgment of the killings, the victims, and their relatives. With support from the Oak Foundation Denmark, we aim to raise awareness about the consequences of violence against women, with the killing of women understood as the most extreme consequence of such violence.

FUNDED BY HELSEFONDEN

The Health Foundation has provided support for Femicide Watch’s knowledge-building efforts and the prevention of femicides in Denmark. Their donation has enabled us to gather extensive information on killings in Denmark and to hold a series of lectures across the country on homicide prevention. We aim to engage 1 percent of the Danish population in violence prevention work, including through presentations and exhibitions on femicides at local libraries throughout Denmark. The Health Foundation’s support has been crucial in raising awareness of the issue and in promoting initiatives that can help prevent future killings.

The Health Foundation’s contribution has not only made it possible to document and analyze these tragic events, but also to share this knowledge with local communities, politicians, and other stakeholders through our lecture series. This has created an important platform for dialogue and awareness—steps that are essential in the effort to prevent femicides in Denmark.

The memorial plaque project works on an overarching level to prevent violence in society through visibility and information, and on a personal level to commemorate the women who were killed.
